Interior window shutters are generally constructed from a lightweight hardwood, such as basswood. This makes them very light and easy to mount, but still very strong and sturdy. They are also very resistant to natural warping and cracking, unlike some other hardwoods. Many are left with a natural finish, giving a rustic or classic look. The finish is also important in that it gives greater resistance to twisting and structural degradation.
You can also purchase interior shutters which have been painted. There is no limit to the colors which you can choose from when painting your shutters. Many people choose white, but as long as you are happy with a color that will match the decoration of your home, any contractor will be happy to oblige you. There is also a growing segment of the industry which produces vinyl interior shutters. They are not yet as popular as wooden shutters, but increasingly are prized for their durability.
Indoor shutters are essentially panels of wood, made up of stiles (vertical) and rails (horizontal) with louvers (slats) in the middle with a tilt bar to adjust them. The panels are generally ¾ of an inch thick, with the louvers being around 1 ¼ inches deep. Most shutters are in sets of two, with a panel on each half of a window, each panel extending the height of the window. However, some are broken into two panels on each side, a top one and a bottom one. If you opt for only a lower half shutter, this is called café style.
