There are two general types of indoor shutters, and the one you choose will probably be a matter of taste since they don’t differ very much in function. Traditional interior window shutters, also referred to as colonial shutters, are the standard type and have panels that are ¾ of an inch thick and louvers that are 1 ¼ inches thick. They are the thinner of the two models and fit in many existing window frames.
The second model is called plantation style. The panel width will vary, but the louvers will be anywhere from 3 – 4 ½ inches thick. There will obviously be fewer louvers, since fewer will be needed to close the panel when they are tilted downwards. The differences between the two are simply aesthetic. Traditional/colonial shutters might be what you think of when you imagine interior shutters, and therefore truly are traditional. However, plantation shutters provide an interesting and more modern look. With either one, you have excellent control over light entering your home and your privacy leaving it. Both will also make attractive additions to the décor of your house, no matter what room you put them in.
